The Mark 23 Model O U.S. SOCOM was adopted as the standard service weapon for advanced combat personal. Special features include a laser-aiming module, and a buffer system for minimized recoil forces. However, this weapon fires very noisy shots. This can be dealt with by equipping the suppressor, specially designed for this make of Socom pistol and can be found on the ground floor of the Tank Hangar. The Socom pistol itself can be found in the truck in the Heliport. To use the Socom, press Square and release to fire. To run and shoot together, press and hold Square and then hold down X as well. Use the D-pad or left analog stick to move and release Square to fire a bullet.
The FA-MAS rifle is solid and reliable, withstanding water, mud, sand and dust test without loss of performance. The last three shots in the FA-MAS chamber are tracer bullets to locate targets by leaving a red trail. To use the FA-MAS, hold down Square for fully automatic firing. Press and hold Square and X together and use the D-pad or left analog stick to move whist firing.
The NIKITA Personal Remote Rocket Launcher (NPRRL) utilises satellite radar tracking systems. AWACS aircraft data and soliton technology, a small fully controllable rocket can be used to seek and destroy targets from enemy soldiers to machinery. To use, press Square to fire and use the D-pad or left analog stick to move the rocket. By going into First Person View mode, you can see things from the rocket's point of view.
The Stinger missile launching system employs a unique two colour, infrared ultraviolet detector using fire-and-forget technology. When armed the Stinger changes to an aiming mode where targets (humans, animals, carmeras and heat-sensitive equipment) are located through a red aiming sensor. To use, fire with the Square button.
Arguably the most accurate semi-auto in the world. The main reason for the utilisation and procurement in this op is that the PSG1 has extremely accurate sights with a default setting of 600 metres, the optimal engagement range. To use, once equipped and looking through the crosshair, use the D-pad or left analog stick to target then press Square to fire.
Also known as Frag Grenades or Fragmentation Grenades, these are explosive devices set to detonate after a five second delay. Causing noise to alert any nearby guard or sensor, these are mainly used to take out vehicles or to blow away any advancing enemies by less-that-subtle operatives. To use, equip and press the Square button to throw.
Dispersing microscopic metal shards into the surrounding air, the Chaff Grenade effectively jams any enemy sensory system for ten seconds. This renders the operative invisible to all cameras and sensors, but also blocks your own radar, so it is advisable to locate any enemy soldier before utilizing it. To use, equip and press square to throw.
Also known as the Flash or Flash-Bang Grenades, these temporarily disable all enemies within a user's line of sight. The flash renders any guard unconscious (but not harmed) for a period not exceeding eight seconds. Th use, equip and press Square to throw.
The volitile plastic explosive works by a remote sensor mechanism and can be set on a wall, floor or even on another human. Used mainly to demolish weakened walls or cameras. To use, press in the direction of the wall and hit the Square button to set. Press O when at a safe distance to detonate.
A directional antipersonnel mine. These devices ahve been planted in the ground (both in the earth and in metal and stone floors) throughout the island. Use a Mine Detector or Thermal Goggles to locate them and note their sensor range. Only eight Claymores can be laid at once. Crawl over them to unearth. To use, press Square to set.
Also known as Food Rations, Combat Rations and C-Rations. These restrore Solid Snake's life bar beacuse of their nourishing nutrients and and blood-clotting agents. There are two ways of using your Rations. Firstly, hold open the item menu, select Rations and press O to eat if your life bar is low. The other way is to equip your Rations and when you life bar reaches 0, you'll automatically eat a Ration so that you don't die.
These cigarettes are Solid Snake's favourite brand. They are amonst his items from the start of the game. By smoking, you life bar drains, but stops short of killing you. The cigarettes can be used to see infrared beams and steady Snake's hand with the PSG1 Sniper Rifle for more accurate shots.
This is another item that Snake has from the start of the mission. They are Snake's multi-synch combat binoculars which allow you to make an extremely detailed analysis of your surrounding area. To zoom in press O and to zoom out press X.
Located in the gas filled corridor in the 2nd complex on floor B2 and in the Blast Furnace on the ground floor, the Kelvar-coated M1-11 Combat Vest (codenamed the "tank torso") is an excellent item to wear when under fire from enemy ordinance.
There are areas in the game to watch out for filled with Sarin, a noxious nerve gas that disables muscles and reduces an operative to a coughing and gibbering wreck. However by using the standard issue Gas Mask located in the gas filled corridor on the 2nd floor basement on the 2nd complex, you can reduce the effects of this deadly gas.
The Thermal Goggles are very handy to have. You can get them on the catwalk (gantry) in the Tank Hangar in the large room with the door open. The Thermal Goggles have sensors that allow you to see heat sources - people, cameras, lighting, infrared beams, wolves, rats, ravens, ammo, mines etc. These Thermal Goggles can be used in either third or first person view mode and are very useful for seeing in dark areas.
The Armstech Standard Issue Mode B Night Vision Goggles are a great aid to you when venturing into dark areas. Unlike the Thermal Goggles you can see you surroundings more clearly. You can use these goggles in third or first person view mode.
The Armstech Pathtracker 3000 portable Mine Detector is used for locating unexploded bombs and mines. A radio wave from buried mines is picked up and transefered to an operative's radar so that they can stay clear, pick up or explode the mine safely or locate the bomb.
There are three Cardboard Boxes on Shadow Moses Island - in the Tank Hangar, Nuke Building B1 and in the Snowfield. These are standard tan boxes with military markings and different coloured stipes along the top. These boxes can be hidden in when turned upside down and used for quick transportation around the base via the three trucks loctated in the Heliport, Nuke Building 1 and Snowfiled.
The Socom Suppressor is designed specifically for the MK-23 (SOCOM) pistol and chambered for the powerful 4 5ACP cartridge. This means that you can fire bullets from your Socom without alerting enemies or surveillance cameras.
Stored in a small green container with a red cross on the box found in the Nuke Building B1, this single capsule contains a powerful new synthetic Alaskan flu and cold inhibitor. Take this pill when you catch a cold to stop the sneezing!
When this drug is taken, an instant period of calm lasting around a minute occurs. During this time, you can use your PSG1 Sniper Rifle without shaking and have an accurate aim. This saves wasting bullets and alerting enemies with the ricochets of the shots that miss.
A particularly important MO disc is located somewhere on Shadow Moses Island. Kenneth Baker, President of Armstech gives you this disc after you have fought Revolver Ocelot. This disc is to be given to your superiors when you complete the mission. It contains information on Metal Gear's test dummy warheads.
The PAN (Personal Area Network) Keycard is a piece of plastic sensitive to your body and electrical fields. It transmits data using the salts in your body as the transmission medium. As you approach a door with a security device slot, it reads the data stored in the card enabling the door to open automatically. There are different security levels ranging between 1 and 7. A level 7 card will open any door but a level 2 card for example will only open a level 1 or 2 door.
The PAL (Permissive Action Link) keycard with a discrete detonation code built into all nuclear weapons systems is a safety control. This key will change shape at different temperatures thus three keys in one. The key is inserted into three laptop terminals to either start or stop the mech, Metal Gear.
If you are unfortunate enough to come across the Time (or Timer) Bomb during your mission, throw it away by holding it open in your items and pressing O (like eating a Ration). This device is small enough to fit into a back pocket, looks like a C4 and is usually micro-wired with enough plastic explosive to destroy a light tank.
This silk handkerchief belongs to FOX-HOUND member, Sniper Wolf. She gave it to her admirer, Hal Emmerich (Otacon) who gave it to Snake. This very personal item of Wolf's smells faintly of her and so her wolves love it. Its silk pattening is of a Kurdish design, and a faint insciption in one corner of the initials "SW" finishes the fine tapestry.
Otacon will give you a bottle of "Calber's Fine English Ketchup" which was brought over by supply boat three weeks prior to the insurrection. When equipped, Snake can lie down on top of this bottle and break it by pressing the O button to spill out its contents and fake a wound.
If you find yourself in need of a rappelling rope, the standard issue, nylon fibre, black espionage twine should come in most handy. Durable and guaranteed not to snap, operatives have had little difficulty lashing such a rope to railings and scooting down the sides of skyscrapers.
Boxed away in the Armoury South, the camera is an optional extra that can be retrieved in this mission and used for photography. To use the camera, equip it and press O to zoom in, X to zoom out and Square to capture a shot. To save a picture, you must have two free blocks on your memory card. After you have saved it, you can give it a name, change the colour and edit it how you want.
