METAL GEAR SOLID.NET

For all you need to know about the Metal Gear series!

Enjoy MGS3 to the max with these cheats, tips and hints!

There is so much more for you to do in MGS3: Snake Eater than to just follow the storyline. Konami have included many little extra details and things which you can do to get the full potential out of the game, and I feel it is my duty to share these wonderful little things with you. Try them out and enjoy the game even more!

A blast from the past (Pre-Tikhogornyj)

If Snake gets hit by The Sorrow's projectiles, you'll see a shot of The Sorrow from his past. There are nine to see in total.

A fiery fight (excluding The Fury's!) (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

Throw a WP grenade at the tumbleweed that blows to and fro on Ocelot's side to make it catch fire.

A flying platform? (Krasnogorje Mountainside)

If you blew up the helicopter in Bolshaya Past Base earlier with the TNT, the mountainside will be patrolled by an annoying flying platform instead. It's far more observant than the chopper, but either destroy it (or its pilot) or sneak past carefully in an appropraite camouflage. There are anti-aircraft guns dotted around which you are free to use if you wish to destroy the flying platform (or helicopter), but be warned, they cause a lot of noise!

A hidden gesture (Krasnogorje Mountaintop Ruins)

As The Boss is leaving, you can watch her from a different perspective if you press R1. As Ocelot is leaving, press R1 to watch the gesture Tatyana makes at him.

A hint at Raikov's preferences (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

You can distract most enemy soldiers with a book or two, but Raikov does not seem to be nearly as interested as his comrades.

A little more care (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

If you tranquilise Raikov in the path of a guard, he will wake Raikov up more carefully than with other guards.

A real cliff-hanger (Dremuchij South)

Have you ever wanted to experience one of the fastest deaths in video game history? Well now you can! The moment the mission begins, run south, dive-roll and watch as you roll off the cliff. Congrats, Snake - you've just achieved a Time Paradox! More interested in working out? You can grab hold of cliff faces, ledges and gantires and do pull ups by pressing L2 and R2 simultaneously. You can do this is first person view mode. Move left and right along the cliff face with L2 and R2 individually.

A slight adjustment (Graniny Gorki Lab)

While wearing the scientist uniform, press Triangle to make Snake adjust his glasses.

A tasty hornets' nest (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

There's a hornets' nest on Snake's side. Shoot it down so you can turn it into a rare delicacy during the forthcoming encounter with The Pain.

A useful frequency (Torture Room)

After Volgin and Ocelot have left, the Boss will come up to Snake and tell him to "Run!" (even though she's just shot him in the leg and his feet aren't even touching the ground!) If you look in first person view mode, you will see The Sorrow behind her holding up a sign with a frequency on it. Remember it so that you can call it once you are locked in your cell.

A Zone of the Enders collector, I see (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West: Granin's Office)

Behind Granin is a model of Jehuty, the mech robot from Zone of the Enders which was also made by Hideo Kojima.

An alarming response (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Disguise yourself as a scientist and stand directly in front of Major Raikov. He has a funny way of greeting you, much like his superior.

And they said Shagohod was the future! (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West: Office)

Use R1 when prompted to see models of Metal Gear REX from MGS1 and Metal Gear RAY from MGS2 at the back of the room. You can also look at Granin's blueprints briefly - you may recognise them as Metal Gear REX. REX also features on a number of pictures around the building.

Another cutscene to add to your collection (Rokovoj Berg)

This final battle has the customary time limit of all MGS final battles. This time it's ten minutes. If neither warrior wins the fight after ten minutes, you'll both get bombed and a new cutscene will be available for you to view again and again in the Demo Theater.

Another hidden gesture (Torture Room)

As Ocelot is leaving, press R1 to see a gesture The Boss makes at him.

Another reference to MGS2 (Weapons Lab: West Wing)

Volgin discovers that the supposed Major Raikov in front of him is an imposter by grabbing Snake's genitals - this is a reference to MGS2 where the President did the same to Raiden.

Another shot of the important frequency (Torture Room)

If you missed the radio frequency The Sorrow was holding up behind The Boss after you had been tortured, or have forgotten it, you can learn it by befriending your guard, Johnny Sasaki. To do this, throw three food packages out of your cell door window by aiming them in first person view mode. Johnny can't believe your generosity and will eat the animals you throw out to him. Once he has devoured his third portion, a cutscene will begin where Snake and Johnny have a friendly chat. Despite not wanting to release Snake, he does show him a photograph of his family and if you look at the back of the picture by pressing R1 when prompted, you can see that frequency again. Call it after the cutscene to open the cell door.

Back to box transport! (Groznyj Grad Northwes)

If you climb into the back of the lorry here you can use it as transport, just like back in MGS1. Simply equip a box, stay still and wait. If you use Box A, you will be transported to the East Wing of the Weapons Lab - you will be deposited in the room full of medical supplies.

Back to the interactive backgrounds (Graniny Gorki Lab)

Remember how there were certain objects you could shoot and play with in MGS2? Well in the lobby you can destroy the television and floor lamp by shooting at them.

Be careful (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

If you get spotted killing Raikov, you'll fail your mission. You can kill Raikov at any time, but if you do so in the bathroom for example, you will have to drag his corpse all the way up to the lockers whilst avoiding detection.

Becoming a joke to the Ocelot Unit (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you hang from the edge of the crevice or put on the Croc Cap, the Ocelot Unit will laugh openly at you.

Beware of the dogs (Bolshaya Past South)

There are guard dogs in this area which will growl and attack you if they spot you. You can prevent them attacking if you wear the Monkey Mask, but it won't stop them barking and alerting the guards to your presence. You can naturally shoot or tranquilise the dogs, but you could alternatively throw them some food and watch them eat it hungrily before having a nice cosy nap. Guard dogs are never fooled by disguises because they can tell that you smell different, but you can interfere with their sensitive noses with a Smoke Grenade.

Blow up some supplies! (Groznyj Grad Northwest)

There's a weapons store here which you could blow up with some TNT. This will prevent the nearby soldiers from having limitless ammo, but they won't thank you if you're caught.

Bonus game - Snake's Nightmare ('Guy Savage') (Torture Room)

After Volgin has finished torturing Snake and the incredibly lengthy cutscene has finally come to a close, Snake will be taken to a cell. Call Para-medic and save. Switch off the console and then load this new save game. A mini-game will begin where you fight against monsters in a very dark and gloomy world. Square and O make you attack and when enough enemies have been slaughtered, the screen colour will change and the playable character will have some more efficient attacks to hurl at his enemies. After about two minutes, or as soon as your character is killed, Snake will wake up and realise he has been having a nightmare. Why not try calling all your contacts now - especially Para-medic and Sigint.

Books for guards (Bolshaya Past Base)

Here you can collect your first books. Use them well - guards love to 'read' them.

Boss camouflages

If you defeat a boss by reducing their stamina to zero, you can get their special camouflage, each with its own useful properties. The End is the exception - you get his Mosin Nagant rifle if you take down his Stamina. To get his camouflage, you have to hold him up from behind. Here are the boss camouflages and their special features: Take out Ocelot's stamina and you will find the "Animal" camouflage in the cave. This camo steadies your hand whilst holding a gun. The Pain's camo is "Hornet Stripe" and whilst wearing it, Snake will not be attacked by hornets, leeches or spiders. The Fear's camo is "Spider" - it gives you a consistently high camo index (about 80% no matter where you are) but it will drain your stamina rapidly. "Moss" is The End's camo. It enables Snake to regain stamina through photosynthesis - simply stand in the sunlight and soak up all the energy - also great camouflage in outdoors areas. The Fury's camo is "Fire". This camo halves damage from fire and explosions and will also protect Snake from receiving burns. The Sorrow can provide you with the "Spirit" camo. This eliminates footstep noise and also allows Snake to drain stamina by choking enemies with CQC. Volgin's camo uniform is "Cold War". It has the Soviet Union Hammer and Sickle on the front and the American Stars and Stripes on the back - so enemies won't attack the front of you but they won't hesitate to attack you from behind! Finally, The Boss will provide you with "Snake" camo. This is very camouflaged and can give you a high level of cover against almost any background.

Browsing Groznyj Grad Southeast

You can get into a part of the sewers if you jump down into a duct behind the Torture Room building. Crawl along here into Groznyj Grad Northeast to find a Kerotan. Also in Groznyj Grad Southeast is the Torture Room. You are welcome to have a look round, but there are guards patrolling so beware. It would be easier to come back after you've acquired some official uniform... or you could just wait until you get taken here by Volgin for a bit of shock treatment.

You can never have too much of The End (Sokrovenno)

Due to multiple deaths and successes from fighting The End, there are a total of five different cut scenes involving The End in the Demo Theatre to achieve and view.

Cancel any alerts in Rassvet

When you enter Rassvet for the first time, you will cancel any alerts you have caused because an important cutscene will ensue.

Catch a magpie (Dremuchij South)

If you want to catch one of the magpies near the Life Medicine, get back your backpack and stay on the branch from which it was hanging. Aim the Mk22 straight to the east and you can see one of the birds in the grass if you look carefully.

Catching frogs in water (Chyornyj Prud)

If you want to catch frogs here, stand close to the shore and watch for ripples.

Cause an alert (Graniny Gorki Lab)

Stand directly in front of a red alarm system button and press triangle the activate it. The guards will immediately start looking for the source of the problem and while wearing the scientist unifrom you can run around in a panic without looking out of place.

Cheat to reveal the location of The End (Sokrovenno)

If you want to know where The End is hiding, open the map in the Survival Viewer and enter the "Legendary Konami Cheat" on your controller using the directional and symbol buttons: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, square, triangle. The End will now be a red circle on your map.

Claymores (Bolshaya Past South)

Thermal goggles are not required for Claymore spotting anymore; you can see them if you look carefully and collect them by crawling over them.

Collect your first boss camouflage (Chyornaya Peschera Cave Branch)

If you've just defeated Ocelot by lowering his stamina to zero, you will find the Animal camouflage in front of you at the start of this level. It acts like a perpetual dose of Pentazemin - whenever you aim a weapon, your hand won't shake.

Crawl through Groznyj Grad (Groznyj Grad Southwest)

There's a hole in the eastern wall which you can crawl through to reach the Southeast area.

Distract Ocelot (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you shoot the hat off Ocelot, he won't continue his fighting until he's retrieved it.

Distract The Boss (Rokovoj Berg)

Throw empty magazines to distract The Boss. Also, if you shoot at the Kerotan while she's nearby, her attention will be diverted.

Divert Volgin's attacks (Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab: Main Wing B1)

You can divert Volgin's attacks by throwing a Russian Glowcap. The next electric attack he makes will hit the mushroom instead of Snake. Chaff grenades are also good at this. To distract Volgin entirely and allow him to electrocute someone else for a change, throw out a living tree frog. If he sees it, he will be very angry since tree frogs remind him of his deadly enemy, rain. In his fury, he will exclaim "A tree frog! Kuwabara! Kuwabara!" before blasting it and using up a lot of his potential electical energy.

Don't fear crocodiles! (Dremuchij Swampland)

Crocodiles may look rather formidable, but they are msot dangerous in water. On the land you can avoid them easily by rolling over them. Naturally they're too big to catch alive but if you equip yourself with a knife, you can approach from the side and stab one easily until you are rewarded with three Gavial portions to feast upon. For the most interesting way to kill a Gavial, wait until one opens its mouth and then hurl a grenade into it. BOOM! Tasty! (Though the Indian Gavials taste nicer than grenades!)

Don't forget the Kerotan! (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you're collecting Kerotan hits, don't forget they even appear during boss fights. If you miss it, you'll have to complete the game and then start again! To find the Kerotan here, look south whilst in the southeast corner and you will see the Kerotan on the other side of the crevice.

Don't kill her! (Zaozyorje West)

If you decide to be very ruthless and kill Eva, you'll create a Time Paradox. She wasn't factored into any future games when Snake Eater came out, admittedly, but she still has an important role to play in completeing this game!

Don't risk it (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

You will fool nobody if you try to wear the Raikov mask with the Scientist Uniform. Also, Major Raikov will not be fooled by you mask - unlike some, Raikov does not have a twin in this game!

Duel Mode

Once you finish the game, you can try out the Duel Mode from the main menu. This is very similar to the Boss Survival Modes of the other games, but you do not have to fight every boss prior to the boss you want to fight at the end of the game! You can also take part in fighting the Ocelot Unit in Rassvet and have another shot at the motorbike chase on exiting Grosnyj Grad. There are two settings: Normal and Special (like in Ghost Babel) and Normal is in the same conditions as the main game whereas Special means that your supplies are limited. You can save your progress too. If you can achieve enough points, you can beat a record and if you beat the record for each fight, you can get the Green Face paint in Normal (your Grip Guage will not diminish) and in Special you can win the DPM Camo which doubles your natural LIFE recovery time.

Electric fences (Bolshaya Past South)

There aren't any electic floors to play with in MGS3 as there were in MGS1, MGS2 and Ghost Babel, but there are electric fences. They won't kill Snake, but they will lose him some health and cause a lot of noise if touched. The fences may be painful for Snake, but they're lethal for guards and if you drag an enemy into one, they will die.

Enemies don't float

If you need a way to get rid of an enemy without any trace of their corpse and you are near to water, throw them in. No enemy soldiers you encounter can swim so you can be sure that he'll sink if he is knocked or dragged into deep water.

Enjoying the M63 (Svyatogornyj East)

The M63 machine gun can be found in the supplies building here. If you equip this and then hold down the fire button, Snake will scream enthusiastically whist firing.

Evading guards as a scientist (Graniny Gorki Lab)

If you get spotted or your cover somehow gets blown, you will fool no one in Alert phase and yet once the alarm is lowered to Evasion, you will suddenly find that guards don't recognise you for who you really are anymore.

Eva's bikini (Zaozyorje East)

If you get Eva here safely without letting her get a single injury, you can see her in a bikini in the cure menu by way of reward.

Eva's insatiable stomach (Zaozyorje East)

Eva has similar tastes in food to Snake. Certain things like the Russian Ration will not taste very nice to her but the Instant Noodles go down a treat. If you keep giving her the noodles, she'll eventually not just want food, but she'll ask for the Instant Noodles by name. If her appetite begins to annoy you or you're running low on supplies, just knock her out. Tranquilise her if you don't mind her talking in her sleep, otherwise use CQC. Now just drag her to the exit. That should shut her up for a bit!

Eva's not impressed (Chyornyj Prud)

Walk into the trap in the north of Chyornyj Prud and then call Eva.

Eva's poses (Zaozyorje West)

Like Snake, Eva has a variety of poses she can assume while you are viewing her in the cure menu.

Extra camouflages

Most of all the camouflages can be picked up at various locations throughout the game, but certain camouflages can only be obtained through an Internet connection or by using a Key Disc. If you have a Network Adaptor for your PS2, select Camouflage Download in the Special menu and get yourself "Grenade" and "Mummy". Mummy stops Snake being harmed by serious injuries. Grenade gives Snake an infinite supply of grenades. If you buy the Snake Eater soundtrack, put Disc One into your PS2 to install the AUSCAM (Australian Camouflage) and if you purchase the single of the Snake Eater theme, you can install Desert Tiger and the Brown face paint.

Extra Codec details

Move Snake around the Codec screen using the right analog stick. Press R3 to zoom in. If you contact other characters regularly, an extra page of personal details will be added including hair colour, size, voice actor, motion capture actor etc. Switch between these pages with the directional buttons.

Fast food (Ponizovje South)

You can get a lot of food in hardly any time by throwing a Stun Grenade into the water near a shoal of fish. Several packages will appear for you to pick up and devour.

First person in the cutscenes

MGS3 enables you to watch certain cutscenes from first person view mode, in which you can often see added details or secret hints you would otherwise miss. You can tell when you are able to use first person view in a cutscenes because you will be prompted by the R1 in the top right hand corner of the screen. However, some cut scenes have hidden first person perspectives which are not indicated by the on-screen R1 prompt. Here is a list of when you can see extra details which are not indicated by the prompt: 1) Krasnogorje Mountaintop: Behind Ruins - see the departure of The Boss and watch Eva immitate Ocelot. 2) On meeting The Fury - if Snake is wearing Night Vision Goggles or Thermal Goggles, you can watch The Fury through them. 3) Torture Room - See the gesture of The Boss as Ocelot leaves. 4) After defeating Volgin and the Shagohod - see The Sorrow behind Eva. 5) After the fight with The Boss - see The Boss and The Sorrow. 6) Ending sequence - See Ocelot outside the window during the handshake. 7) Ending sequence - Look at the grave through your tears.

For those who loved Raiden (Dremuchij South)

If you were a fan of Raiden in MGS2 (and I know his fans exist!) then you may want to choose the 'I like MGS2!' option at the start of the game. The opening cutscene will feature Snake wearing his Raikov mask which resembles Raiden. Major Zero will want you to remove it before you carry on your mission though.

Foretelling the future (Pre-Tikhogornyj)

The Sorrow occasionally adds comments as he is drifting away from you in his 'boss battle'. One of the things he says is 'You will all be killed by your own sons'. - Indeed Naked Snake was killed by one of his sons.

Forget Eva and run! (Zaozyorje West)

If you want to save time, don't worry about dragging Eva along with you. She'll only slow you down and complain that she needs food. If you do go off and leave her, you will find that she miraculously appears next to Snake after the cutscene where the soldiers arrive.

Fun on the title screen

Before you press "Start" when prompted on the title screen, you should take note of just how many things you can do on the title screen. R1 will speed up the animation; R2 slows it down; R3 changes the colours; L1 swaps the size of the character in the foreground with the character in the background; L2 exchanges the colours of the character in the foreground with the character in the background; L3 chooses a new background pattern (total of ten); left analog stick moves the pattern in the background; and Triangle changes the background to black. There are four different CQC scenes shown on this title screen. Once you reach a certain point in the game, Snake will be wearing an eye-patch during these sequences.

Fun with TNT (Bolshaya Past Base)

Here you can pick up some TNT. This little wonder can cause so much chaos! You can completely destroy the supply store in the shed behind the base. Leave the area (via the way you came) and then return. The guards groan regularly and loudly about the hunger they are suffering. You can also prevent these guards from having infinite ammo by blowing up the Armoury. Once again, leave and then return to find that the soldiers will run out of ammo and won't be able to replace it! Finally, if you want, you can blow up the helicopter and that way it won't bother you while you're climbing the Krasnogorje Mountainside later, but it will be replaced by a Flying Platform which is far worse, but hey, it's your choice. Blow up the chopper if you want!

Get a unique meal fresh from The Pain (Chyornaya Peschera Cave)

If you got the hornets' nest down from the tree while you were fighting Ocelot and haven't eaten it yet, throw the nest onto The Pain's island and if it lands near his swarm, it will become The Pain's hornet nest. After the battle, jump onto the island from above and collect the nest - a delicacy you can only get here.

Get back the Tsuchinoko and/or parrot (Tikhogornyj)

If you had a live Tsuchinoko or The End's Parrot before Volgin tortured Snake, you will find these animals near the waterfall. You do not need to usea mousetrap to relocate the Tsuchinoko. If you didn't have them before you were tortured, don't even bother to look for them.

Get out of the cell (Torture Room)

One way of escaping from the cell is to go into the Survival Viewer and rotate Snake about ten times. When you return to the game, Snake will vomit and Johnny Sasaki will go in to see if you're OK. Now's your chance to make a break for it!

Get rid of those annoying hornets (Chyornaya Peschera Cave)

If hornets swarm up to Snake's head, you can make them scatter and get a better first person view of things by simply smoking a cigar.

Get the Moss camouflage (Sokrovenno)

Unlike the other boss camos which are obtained after defeating the boss with non-lethal weapons, it doesn't work like that with The End. To get it, you must use the D-Pad to sneak in absolute silence up behind The End and then when you are directly behind him, draw a weapon and aim at his head. Do not fire - just keep the weapon pointed at his head and eventually he will drop the Moss uniform. Fire at him afterwards before he becomes temporarily invulnerable. He will throw a stun grenade as he makes his escape, but if you turn away from the blast and then fire several shots at him while he's fleeing, you may hit him a couple more times. Once you have the Moss camo, put it on immediately as it offers brilliant camouflage and allows Snake to gain stamina by the process of photosynthesis - he will turn sunlight into energy!

Get the parrot (Sokrovenno)

This is the only chance you have to get The End's parrot. Where the parrot is depends on your difficulty setting but in normal, it's on the roof of the armoury in Sokrovenno South. If The End sees you shooting his pet, he'll be very angry (much like Vulcan Raven didn't appreciate you shooting his ravens in MGS1!) If you tranquilise and collect the parrot then release it by equipping it as a weapon, then throwing it, it will fly back to The End and make a lot of noise at the same time so you can locate where the old sniper is. You can eat the parrot too if you are that way inclined, but it tastes terrible so it's probably better not to bother.

Get the vine melons (Svyatogornyj South)

Vine melons are growing on the vines that hang between trees. You can see them better with the thermal goggles. They're quite tasty and pretty rare, so get some here if you would like to try one.

Get up close and personal with Eva (Zaozyorje West)

If you crawl, Eva will get down onto the ground and do the same. If you crawl too near her, she'll assume you're up to something and get rather annoyed.

Get useful frequencies (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Interrogate nearby guards to learn the frequency which opens the armoury door. Alernatively you could get a guard to open it for you by luring him there... or you could wait until you're disguised as major Raikov.

Get Volgin's camo - quickly! (Weapons Lab: Main Wing B1)

If you defeat Volgin by reducing his stamina to zero, you will get a bonus camouflage at the end of the battle. It will fall out of him and you must collect it quickly before the next cutscene starts. His camo is called "Cold War" and is very useful against your enemies. It has the American Stars and Stripes on the back but the Soviet Union Hammer and Sickle on the front. Your Russian enemies won't hesitate to shoot you from behind but they won't dare to shoot your Russian side. Use this camo most effectively in the sidecar as you escape from Groznyj Grad.

Give Volgin a taste of his own medicine (Weapons Lab: Main Wing B1)

During the fight with Volgin, if you fire at the overhead water pipes and Volgin gets drenched while performing an electric attack, he will get injured.

Going batty (Krasnogorje Tunnel)

There are a lot of bats sleeping on the ceiling. If you want to have them in your food supply, throw a stun grenade.

Haunted by The Sorrow (Pre-Tikhogornyj)

During the long walk with The Sorrow, you can take photographs with the camera you found in the Torture Room. Some photos will show ghostly images of the development staff of Konami who made MGS3. Save these photos and view them in your photo album later.

Hidden cave full of useful stuff (Dolinovodno)

Under the bridge (on the side nearest Rassvet) there is a guard patrolling up and down through the grass. Take him out and grab the XM16E1 assault rifle, MK22 bullets and Pentazemin. You can also access this cave from the bridge if you hang from the left edge and then release your grip with X over the extended branch below and then grab this branch with Triangle. You then have to get out of the cave by either hanging or pressing flat against the cliff face.

Hidden footage of The Fury (Groznyj Grad Underground Tunnel)

If you put on the Thermal Goggles or Night Vision Goggles before you encounter The Fury, you can use R1 to see him through them during the opening cutscene.

Ignore an alert (Ponizovje Warehouse)

Although in some cases, you have to wait for an alert status to end before you can open doors, you may be relieved to know that you can still use the exit to Svyatogornyj South even when you've caused an alert.

In a position of power! (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Once you have stuffed Major Raikov in the locker, don his uniform and put on your lovely mask. From now on you are superior to everyone around you. You look up to no one except Volgin (literally) and so before you go and find Sokolov, have a leisurely wander around Groznyj Grad. You can go wherever you like - locked doors will open for you. Guards will stop to salute you and you will not be acting suspicious if you beat them up. They will simply get up shaking and beg for your pardon and thank you. Salute by pressing triangle but if you hold it down too long or stand in front of a guard without saluting at all, they may get suspicious. You will also cause suspicion if you start blowing things up. You cannot equip any weapons whilst you are disguised as Raikov since none of your guns match his. Guards will ignore or salute you, but dogs will smell that you're an imposter and will raise the alarm so keep away from their eager noses.

Infuriate Eva (Zaozyorje West)

Swallow the Fake Death Pill to scare Eva. Do it twice to make her furious!

Inspecting a beehive (Dolinovodno)

On completing MGS3, you can browse through the cutscenes of the game and one cutscene ("Beehive") which shows Snake inspecting a hornets' nest is only available for viewing if you reach Dolinovodno without having the Alert status.

Interact with the opening movie

Once you start the Snake Eater mission and save, the intro movie will be shown before the game starts. You don't just have to watch it or skip it, you can interact with it! Press R3 to change the symbols in the background and use the right stick to change the symbols - symbols include the Blackbird plane, MiG, birds, gunship, Soviet Union hammer and sickle, ban the bomb peace symbol, and a parachutist. L3 changes the the typeface and language of the credits - you can switch between English (Latin characters), Japanese (in Katakana), Korean (Hangul), Russian (Cyrillic) and, for some reason... snake skeletons. The left stick changes the direction of the text. R1 adds a voice which whispers "Snake Eater". The D-Pad shows patterns, L1 and L2 change the colours of the credits, the symbols and the patterns. The pattern shown when you press R3 for the first time depends on the current day of the week (according to your PS2's clock). Before the intro movie starts, the Konami logos are displayed. While they are on the screen, enter the following code (using the directional buttons and command buttons): up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, square, triangle. The screen will flash briefly to confirm the entry and instead of the developer names, the opening movie will show credits for the creators of the intro movie! This is the famous Konami Code and can be used at one point or another on most of Konami's games.

Interfere with the flying platforms (Ponizovje South)

You can mess up the flying platorms' performance if you use a Chaff Grenade. Set fire to a platform's engine by shooting at it. Destroy the spotlight on a platform with a well-aimed shot - unless you've been spotted, the platform will be called for repairs and will leave you in peace for some time.

Irritate your enemies

You can irritate suspicious enemies if you manage to hit the exclamation mark which appears over their head.

It's the Ocelot Unit again! (Sokrovenno)

If you killed off The End at Ponizovje Warehouse: Exterior with the SVD, Sokrovenno will instead be patrolled by the Ocelot Unit. You do not have to fight any of them - you simply have to get to Krasnogorje Tunnel alive. If you want to have a go at the Ocelots, note their numbers on the screen: eight in the south, eight in the north and five in the west.

Johnny is ever the same! (Torture Room)

Remember how Johnny Sasaki in MGS1 didn't like you messing around in your cell? Well his grandfather is just the same. If you hide under the bed, you'll get a reaction (though he won't open your cell door). He'll also react if you knock against the bars of your cell or play with the SAA revolver. To do this, equip the revolver, go into first person and move the right stick. Now, if only you had three, you could learn to juggle!

Kerotans

In almost every level, you can find a little plastic frog which croaks when you hit it. The locations of these frogs can be very obvious or incredibly obscure! They are even around during boss battles and on the rapid escape paths away from Groznyj Grad. Kerotans will alter in position in the same levels depending on whether you're doing the Virtuous Mission or the Snake Eater mission. Hit them all to get the Stealth camouflage. Thankfully you don't have to hit them all in one playing - the ones you haven't hit, you can go back and hit in another play of the game. To find out if you've hit the Kerotan in the area, put on the GA-KO camouflage. If it makes a noise, you still have a Kerotan to hit in that area!

Kill Raikov spectacularly (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Knock Raikov unconscious and stuff him in the locker. Then attach some TNT to the locker door, equip the mines and place one facing the locker. Now stand back and equip the TNT again. Detonate the explosive on the locker door and watch the door fall off, then Raikov on top of it. He'll land on the mine and BOOM!

Knock yourself out... literally! (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West)

You can pick up a special knock-out handkerchief in the closet of the meeting room on this floor. If you equip it and wave it near someone, you can knock out them out... but if you wave a handkerchief three times Snake will be tranquilised by the powerful vapours.

Learn more about Eva (Zaozyorje West)

Look at Eva's medical record in the cure menu. You can find out what she has eaten recently (even before meeting Snake), you can see what she does in her spare time, and you can discover the secret of her breast size.

Leeches and Para-medic (Chyornyj Prud)

If you get leeches on your body, call Para-medic before you burn it off. Her horror is not shared by Snake.

Life and stamina support

If you select "Continue" in the same area on three different occasions, MGS3 will appear to notice that you're struggling and will offer help. If you're life guage is below 50% on the third continue, it will be raised to the halfway point. The same goes for your stamina bar.

Listen to Granin's thoughts (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West)

If you wait in front of Granin's door with the microphone after speaking with him, you can eavesdrop. He will react when you knock or try to open the door again, but as he steadily gets more drunk, he will soon fall fast asleep.

Little blood-suckers! (Chyornyj Prud)

The swamp here is full of leeches which are sure to latch onto Snake and have a meal. They drain stamina pretty rapidly, and if you ever find your stamina going down at an alarming rate, check for leeches. There are three ways of sorting out leeches. One is to spray yourself with the Bug Juice before you go into the swamp. It won't last forever, but will deter leeches for a short while. The second way is to wear The Pain's camo uniform 'Hornet Stripe' which protects the wearer from leeches, spiders and hornets. Of course, you can only use this if you have already played the game and got The Pain's camouflage by tranquilising him as oppose to killing him! The third way of sorting out leeches is to just go into the swamp anyway and when you get out, go into the survival viewer and burn them off with your cigar. If you want, you can leave a leech on your body throughout the whole game (it won't ever drop off of its own accord like real leeches do!) and when you complete the game, you will receive the codename of "Leech", but no bonus reward comes with such a rank!

Live up the game's title (Dremuchij North)

This is operation Snake Eater, and if you're in the mood for some fresh snake, you can find a Green Tree Python in a location where its name suggests.

Low on batteries?

Using equipment such as the Active Sonar, AP Sensor, Motion Detector, Thermal Goggles etc. can drain your battery, especially if you keep them equipped or use them repeatedly. You can acquire batteries round and about, and sometimes shake them out of guards, but if you unequip your battery-draining item when you're not using it, you'll find that the battery recharges itself.

Major Raikov's secrets (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

If you interrogate Raikov (it's best to do this in the toilet where no one else will spot you), you can get some useful hints about Volgin as well as hear some very Raidenish things.

Make Ocelot angry (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you shoot the Markhor in the background, Ocelot will get angry and increase his speed of movement which in turn will make him harder to hit. Maybe it's best if you leave that Markhor alone.

Make Ocelot immitate you (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you have already played the game once and got the Single Action Army, you can spin it round your finger during the fight with Ocelot. He'll imitate you.

Male eye-candy

There are dozens of pictures of real Japanese models in both the Graniny Gorki Lab and in Groznyj Grad.

Meet the true 'snake eater' (Dremuchij South)

Here you can find your first Markhor (its name means "snake eater") and it will make for a very satisfying meal (produces two portions of food), but due to its size you cannot capture one alive.

Messing with the PS2's clock

MGS3 is the first Metal Gear game to be fully interested in the time of day and date you are playing on. Your food supplies are directly related to the day and time. Snake will heal over time if you save your game and then turn off the console. The LIFE guage will regenerate completely within a day and injuries will heal depending on Snake's stamina level - but approximately within five hours. Naturally, if you put the PS2's clock forward, you can speed up this process, but the problem now occurs that your food will be going rotten. Food rots all the time and it will go from being fully edible to giving Snake a reduced stamina increase and a stomach ache, to just being useless for stamina increase and purely able to cause a stomach ache. Captured food lasts longer than killed food and amongst your supplies, meat will go off in a day, and completely useless after three. Other natural foodstuffs such as plants and fruits will still be fresh after two days but of no nutritional value after six. Rations, Instant Noodles and Calorie Mates last indefinitely, so stock up on them if you can. If you want to solve the problem of food going off, you can turn your PS2's clock back...

Metal Gear magazines (Graniny Gorki Lab)

Throughout the building there are magazines with Metal Gear Solid related covers. Flip them over by firing at them.

More posters?! (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West)

There's a poster in the lobby on this floor. It's of Hiroko Usada (also known as Hiro Usada) who also contributed to Konami's Silent Hill 3 and 4. Silent Hill 3 fans will find familiar posters on the upper floor of the building.

More than one way to enter (Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior: Outside Walls)

You can enter the Inside Walls safely through the hidden hole in the wall on the left hand side, but if you knock out the guards, move to the door on the east and then knock on the door, a guard will open it to investigate. Hide behind the boxes as he comes to see what's going on, but once his back is turned, sneak behind him.

Motion capture actors

When a character appears on the screen for the first time, the name of the voice actor is displayed (e.g. David Hayter for Naked Snake), but if you press O you can see the name of the motion capture actor instead.

Naked Raikov (Pre-Tikhogornyj)

If you killed Major Raikov, you will see him running around naked while you're following The Sorrow. This is another reference to how much like Raiden Raikov is - Raiden had to walk around naked too in MGS2.

Nothing on TV?

If you're bored of watching TV and for some reason you're bored of playing MGS3 but want to watch a film, don't go down to your local movie retailer for a fresh suggestion - simply call Para-medic and save your game. Para-medic appears to have seen every film the first half of the twentieth century had to offer... whereas Snake appears not to have seen any! Para-medic will not only give you titles of genuine films, but she will also give a brief summary of the plot and her own personal opinion. Why not watch a few of her reccommendations if you're stuck for things to watch?

Ocelot discovers his love for revolvers (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

Snake has shown Ocelot to the world of revolvers, which is something Ocelot doesn't regret, but it now means that he's got a reloading problem; well at least Ocelot doesn't see it as a problem! He takes his time reloading and if you want to get a couple of shots in while he's having fun, you can skip the short cutscenes by pressing Start and then firing at him while he's still playing with his new weapons.

Ocelot wants to fight alone (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

When you first hit Ocelot, the other Ocelots will be angry and fire at Snake. Ocelot doesn't want that and will tell them to stop. While he's calling them to order, he will be momentarily distracted and it should be quite easy to get some more shots fired at him.

Ocelot's hornet problem (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

Ocelot's side has three hornets' nests which you can shoot down. He will be very vulnerable as he is forced to deal with the stinging insects instead of with Snake and it will be fairly easy to use this distraction to your advantage. Be warned though; if you don't fight fair, Ocelot won't either and can shoot down the nest on your side. You can sort them out using the bug juice, cigar, or knife (or Hornet Stripe camo if you have it).

Once again the Croc Cap causes people to look twice (Graniny Gorki Lab)

If you decide to wear the Croc Cap with your scientist uniform and a guard spots you, he will question Snake and take off his ridiculous headgear.

Otacon's family (Graniny Gorki Lab B1 West: Granin's Office)

When Granin says that he's going to send the documents to his friend in the states, we see a picture of Granin with someone who looks very much like Hal Emmerich (Otacon) from MGS1 and MGS2, the developer of Metal Gear REX. The picture is clearly of Otacon's father. To help confirm this thought, if you call Sigint after the conversation with Granin, he will talk about the concept of tanks having legs and completely dismiss the idea (I wonder what Sigint would have said if he'd seen several Metal Gear RAYs advancing on him!) The topic of walking tanks reminds Sigint of a scientific paper published in America by some mad scientist called something like Emerson or Heimlich...

Oyama face paint (Graniny Gorki Lab 1F)

If you want the pointless Oyama face paint, it's located in an air vent leading from the inner courtyard to Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior: Inside Walls.

Para-medic's lovely lecture (Chyornyj Prud)

Catch a Coral Snake and then call Para-medic. Snake will become very drowsy as Para-medic drones on and on.

Pedantic Major Zero (Chyornyj Prud)

When you reach the end of Chyornyj Prud, give Major Zero a call and he will believe that you don't know what you're doing, so he will make Snake repeat the directions to him.

Poster in the plane (Pre-Dremuchij East)

During the opening cutscene while Snake is in the plane, look up in First Person to see a poster.

Precise aiming with close-range weapons over long distances

If there's a stationary target in the distance which you need to hit but don't have the sniper rifle, don't panic. Equip a pistol then put the weapon away with R2. Now, take out your scope and aim precisely at the desired target, then press L2 and R1 and fire. Provided you didn't touch the analog stick, you should still be aiming at that precise spot.

Prevent reinforcements coming (Dremuchij North)

If you press R1 during the cutscene, you will notice the guard has a radio on his chest pocket. If you hit this device, it'll break and the soldier will be unable to call for support.

Put a premature end to The End (Ponizovje Warehouse: Exterior)

As you enter this area, a long cutscene will begin and towards the end, The End will be wheeled out of the warehouse. Just after the cutscene you will have a few seconds to eliminate The End if you picked up the SVD in Ponizovje West. To give The End a taste of his own medicine, you can snipe him now by firing at the barrels next to the warehouse gate. That will blow up the soldier pushing the wheelchair and you now have a few seconds to shoot The End before he can roll to safety. As soon as you kill the talented sniper, put away your sniper rifle and sidestep the wheel. If you kill The End in this way, you will obviously not have to fight him later (but you'll have to face the Ocelot Unit instead) and you will not be able to collect The End's Moss Camouflage or his Mosin Nagant sniper rifle.

Quick descent (Ponizovje Warehouse)

The quickest way to get down is not to take the stairs, but to swing over the top railing and then drop down when the guard on the middle floor is looking in the direction of the supplies. Do the same on the next floor and then wait until the guard walks underneath Snake before you drop on his head to knock him out.

Quick route (Svyatogornyj West)

There are guards here and you may wish to tread carefully and collect food here, but if you're simply looking for a quick exit, sprint to the west, turn north and don't run on the lower path because there's an oncoming guard; stick to the top path where he won't see you. Finally, if you run straight on, the two guards won't see you.

A quick way to Krasnogorje Mountaintop (Krasnogorje Mountainside)

If you're in a bit of a hurry and know the way, you can get past the first two guards with minimum fuss. Run towards the first guard then sneak the last few feet to avoid being heard. Do the same with the second guard.

Raikov and Raiden (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Raikov is a reminder of MGS2's Raiden. There is a poster of Raiden on the inside of the door to the locker which you stuff Raikov's body into.

Raikov's insatiable stomach (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Raikov loves his food and if you throw food in his path, he'll eat it no matter what it is. His responses vary depending on the food. "Delicious!" for anything tasty and not rotten, and negative responses to terrible-tasting food, including Russian Rations! However, throw him something which has gone rotten and he will need to go to the bathroom. Knock on his toilet door several times and he will even let you in!

Reactions from The Boss

On playing the game through again, you will have her gun, the Patriot. She won't react to it if you call her while it's equipped but she will have things to say about the GA-KO camo and the Tuxedo.

Receiving a rather abrupt wake-up call

Guards who find other guards sleeping on the job will not suspect that Snake or anyone else has tranquilised them. They will not raise the alarm but they will wake up their sleeping or unconscious ally with a heavy kick.

Reduce Ocelot's stamina to nothing (Bolshaya Past Crevice)

If you defeat Ocelot by reducing his stamina to zero, the Animal Camouflage is yours to keep and can be found at the start of the next level.

Reference to MGS2 (Dremuchij East)

Major Zero tells Snake to find out if ADAM is who he says he is by asking the secret question "Who are the Patriots?" with the correct answer being "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo". The Patriots are a driving force behind the plotline of MGS2.

Remove soldiers from the bridge (Dolinovodno)

You can make the bridge a lot more unstable by shooting or slashing the ropes which hold it up. Guards will be more easily pushed off the bridge if it is unsteady. You cannot destroy the bridge completely though (or later cutscenes would be impossible!)

Remove that chopper! (Krasnogorje Mountainside)

The helicopter's not much of a problem really, despite its intimidating appearance, and it probably won't spot you if your camouflage is sensible. If its presence does bother you though, shoot the pilots head with the SVD or Mosin Nagant to eliminate the threat.

Reusable mousetraps (Rassvet)

There are two mousetraps in Rassvet - one can be shaken from Ocelot and the other is under the building. If you leave them somewhere then leave them behind, you will find they are still there when you return a week later for your Snake Eater mission! You can collect them and their catches and use them as many times as you desire.

Rolling barrels (Rassvet)

Horizontal barrels can be rolled down slopes with Triange. Some will explode when they hit something but others will need help from your gun before they explode. You can shoot any barrel to make it explode and any nearby guards will be sorry they were so close!

Roy Campbell before he went grey (After Rokovoj Bereg)

While Snake is in the company of the President, a man talks about FOX. He is a younger Roy Campbell who will be heavily involved in the organisation which succeeds FOX, FOX-HOUND.

Saved data icons

If you look at the details on your PS2 memory card, you can identify MGS3 saves by The Boss' Patriot gun together with a white flower from Rokovoj Bereg. If you save in the Torture Room (in the cell), the data icon will be the same except the flower will be red, not white. Snake vs. Monkey saves will still have the Patriot, but will instead be accompanied by a banana.

Secret Codec frequencies

When you interrogate enemy soldiers, you may find that they sometimes divulge useful frequencies. Some call in support and others end the Caution or Alert phases... but they only work once and are restricted to the area in which they are given. Sometimes guards will tell you frequencies for the "Healing Radio". When you first listen to each of the Healing Tracks, your stamina will increase. Call these frequencies as often as you like, but they will only heal once. On interrogation, some soldiers will reveal information about the location of equipement or enemy troops. Such information will be marked on your map with white dots for equipment and red dots for enemies.

See the end of The End with minimal effort (Sokrovenno)

If this battle if proving to be too long or too difficult, you can simply save your game and not play MGS3 for eight days. When you reload your saved game, The End will have died. If you cannot wait eight days to continue, put your PlayStation 2's clock forward. When you reload, a cutscene will show Snake sneaking up on The End only to find him already dead. I think we can safely assume he has finally died of old age, although some may suggest he died of boredom. If you kill The End this way, you cannot get his camo or gun. When you leave the area after the fight, if you have meddled with your PS2's clock, save the game again and then put the clock back to how it should be!

Sigint and the Choco Chip (Bolshaya Past South)

You can pick up the Choco Chip camouflage here. Put it on and call Sigint.

Snake and his weak stomach

Snake is an amazing warrior - there's no doubt about that, but if he does have a flaw, it must be that he cannot spin around with out getting so dizzy that he is violently sick. You can make Snake sick by entering the Survival Viewer, then going into the Viewer and rotating Snake with the right analog stick. A dozen spins should do the trick. Exit the Viewer and when you return to the game, Snake will vomit. This reduces stamina but it does have its good points. If you've eaten something poisonous for example, you can clear your stomach by puking it back up. You can also trick gullible guards such as Johnny Saskai into believing you're ill. Sometimes, Snake will be sick for other reasons - I am thinking of the fight with Volgin here. If you get too close to Volgin, he'll land a couple of punches and knock Snake flying. The power of the attack will be enough to make Snake sick again and will not only reduce stamina but waste valuable (and rapidly diminishing) fighting time! Be careful!

Snake, you STINK! (Graniny Gorki Lab 2F)

If you go into the toilets and smash the door on the right, you can find the Fly camouflage. This uniform makes you smell so bad that no enemy will dare to engage in close combat. The camo was designed by fans in a competition in Japan, as were the Banana, Animal and Mummy costumes. Unfortunately, Snake's contacts have nothing to say about such clothes.

Snake's bandana (Dolinovodno Riverbank)

While watching the cutscene on the bridge, we discover where Naked Snake gets his bandana from for the rest of the game. Later in the Metal Gear series, Solid Snake was hardly ever to be seen without a very similar bandana.

Spatsa (Graniny Gorki Lab 1F)

If you go to the inner courtyard, you can find a Spatsa growing. Its name means "bringer of sleep" in Russian. Talk to Para-medic for more information about this mushroom and throw one to a hungry guard if you think he deserves a rest.

Startle Para-medic (Weapons Lab: East Wing)

Call Para-medic whilst disguised as Major Raikov. She will think that she's got the wrong number.

Still want to scare and annoy Eva? (Zaozyorje West)

Once again, your Croc Cap can produce a wonderful reaction. So long as there is no alert status, you can surprise and irriate Eva with your Crocodile Cap, Monkey Mask and Cardboard Boxes. If you just stand and stare at her, she'll get angry about that too. Honestly, there's no pleasing some people!

Stun Grenades are now dangerous! (Dremuchij North)

This is the place where you can pick up some Stun Grenades for the first time. In previous Metal Gear games, Stun Grenades have harmed everyone nearby except Snake - a bit unrealistic really. Not so in MGS3. You must turn away from a Stun Grenade after you have thrown it to prevent temporary blindness. If used at close range, you will also become temporarily deaf.

Suspicious boxes

If a guard becomes suspicious of your cardboard box and lifts it up, he will be distracted for a moment. Now's your chance to quickly run around and attack him with CQC.

Sweet dreams, Eva! (Zaozyorje West)

Tranquilise Eva with the Mk22. She will dream of several things including Snake, The Boss and a dog called Fido. To wake her up simply go into the cure menu and pull out the dart... or you could do the more violent option and give her a good kick!

Taking on the Ocelot Unit (Rassvet)

The number of Ocelot Unit members you have to fight depends on the difficulty setting you are playing on. There will be eight in Normal, nine in Hard and ten in Extreme.

Teasing Sokolov (Rassvet)

Remember how you could annoy the President in MGS2 by tapping on the outside wall of his cell? You can scare Sokolov before you go to rescue him as well. Try knocking on the wall under his window, shooting the glass and throwing stuff into his room. You can throw live animals, food, and, if you want to see a Game Over screen, you can kill Sokolov by lobbing in some grenades for good measure.

The best places to aim

If you need to take out an enemy quickly, the best place to aim is the head (for obvious reasons), but sometimes head shots are tricky from a distance and can cause an unnecessary alert instead. If a headshot is too risky, a tranquiliser dart to the abdomen should prove to be just as effective.

The bonus items

There are loads of useful bonus items to get hold of. Here's a nice little list of the main ones. Once you've saved the completed the MGS3 game and started again, you will find that all the camouflages you collected, downloaded and obtained off Key Discs are in your backpack from the beginning. You will also have the Tuxedo and the Patriot weapon used by The Boss. This weapon is very powerful and has infinite ammo. If you picked up the Camera in the Torture Room, this will be amongst your items. If you picked the right gun in the WIG with Ocelot, you will have the Single Action Army as one of your weapons. The EZ gun is always available to those playing on Very Easy, but for other difficulty levels, it can be acquired if you collect every plant and animal in the game at least once. When equipped, the EZ gun allows you to have a camo index of at least 80% all the time, and your stamina will steadily go up. The Infinity Face Paint which gives you infinite ammo when worn can be yours if you catch a live Tsuchinoko or if you are awarded the highest ranking on anything other than Very Easy. Finally, the Stealth Camouflage which allows you to become invisible to your enemies is available for those who get the best codename (except on Very Easy), or receive the code name 'Chameleon' (never alerted a single guard) or Kerotan (hit every single Kerotan at least once).

The Boss' reactions (Rokovoj Bereg)

Surprisingly enough, The Boss will react to the Croc Cap, Monkey Mask and Books. Why not try and see for yourself!

The consumption of rotten food

If you throw out some rotten food and a soldier decides to eat it, they will soon wish they hadn't. Johnny Sasaki in the Torture Room and Major Raikov in Groznyj Grad East Wing are special targets for rotten food as you can be sure that they will head for the nearest toilet. If you decide to blow up a supplies building like the one in Bolshaya Past Base, the guards will soon become hungry and will eat any food you leave them whether it be rank, rotten or even poisonous. Watch the chaos you can cause by leaving out a few scraps of rotten food! Another time to throw out rotten food is during your fight with The Fear. The Fear uses up a lot of stamina and needs to eat all the time. He will be disgusted by rotten food and will weaken significantly with a loud grumble of the stomch as he looks for safer food. If Snake himself eats rotten or poisonous food, the best thing to do is take digestive medicine or vomit by rotating Snake over ten times in the survival viewer and then exiting.

The Demo Theatre

After completing MGS3, you can access the Demo Theatre from the menu. From here you can watch any of your favourite cutscenes. Secret and alternative cutscenes will be hinted at but not revealed until you witness them in the game. Extra sequences you may have missed include The End being killed in front of the Warehouse; when you run out of time with the fight with The Boss; if you let The End die of natural causes; befriending Johnny Sasaki in the Torture Room; your final encounter with Ocelot and what you choose to do. If you select the picture on the left in the Demo Theatre, you can watch all the cutscenes from that point forth (until it ends or you cancel by pressing Start). If you just want to see one specific scene, choose it on the right. You can still watch certain cutscenes in first person and you can also choose what camouflage and face paint Snake is wearing in most cutscenes.

The easiest entrances (Graniny Gorki Lab Exterior: Interior Walls)

If you enter the courtyard via the hole in the west wall, run immediately to the right, then turn to the north a few feet behind the lorry. From here you can run diagonally to the entrance. There's an even easier entrance for those who don't mind being thrown in prison: disguise yourself as a scientist (and make sure you take off any face paint!) then allow yourself to get spotted by a guard. They won't think much of your attempts to escape and you will be taken to an open prison cell in Gorki Lab B1 East.

The embedded transmitter (Torture Room)

Once you arrive in your cell, go into the Cure menu and dislodge the bullet The Boss shot into your leg using the fork on the cell floor. You can also dislodge the transmitter Ocelot thrust into your back, but if you wish to see an interesting cutscene involving Eva in Tikhogornyj, leave the transmitter there!

The end of The Sorrow (Pre-Tikhogornyj)

At the end of this "battle", Snake will just appear to drop dead. Don't panic and turn off your console cursing. Snake's not really dead - The Sorrow was playing a Psycho Mantisesque trick of making you believe there's something wrong. Press and hold L2 to open the Item menu and take the revival pill. After this we see The Boss and The Sorrow together and we learn that the skeleton at the Dolinovodno Riverbank is actually The Sorrow's. When Snake resurfaces from the water, press R1 and look up and right to see The Sorrow.

The Fear's camouflage (Graniny Gorki South)

If you reduce The Fear's stamina to zero, you will get the Spider camouflage. This is great cover and will hardly ever allow Snake's camo index to fall below 70%, even when running. However, it will drain stamina much faster than normal.

The Fury's camouflage (Groznyj Grad Underground Tunnel)

As usual, you can get this boss camouflage by reducing The Fury's stamina to zero. After the cutscene, Snake will be standing next to the camo. It's called Fire and halves damage from fire and explosions as well as protecting from burns.

The ghostly Sorrow (Dremuchij North)

During the encounter with The Boss, press R1 when prompted to see The Sorrow, the most ubiquitous of the Cobras.

The ghosts of the Konami team return (The Sorrow - Boss Battle)

During the encounter with The Sorrow, take photos and you will find that they occasionally contain additional ghosts of the Konami staff who helped to make MGS3. There are 23 to collect. (View photos under "Special" on the main menu).

The guy with the flamethrower (not The Fury!) (Krasnogorje Mountaintop)

After meeting up with Eva, you'll find there's a guard with a flamethrower patrolling. If you shoot the tank on his back, it'll explode, taking him with it.

The Johnny legacy (Torture Room)

The guard here is the grandfather of Solid Snake's cell's guard, Johnny Sasaki in MGS1 (who also featured in Special Missions and MGS2!) He also happens to be named Johnny as well (it's a family tradition). He has the same habits as the future Johnny, especially a medical problem which means he spends a lot of time complaining in the toilet.

The life-saving medicine (Bolshaya Past Base)

Pick up the LIFE Medicine from the storeroom and call Sigint while you've got it equipped.

The madness of the monkeys

Once you've completed the game, all the levels of Snake vs Monkey will be available for you to play through. Some monkeys behave in strange ways... you can freeze monkeys by the heater next to the cellar stairway, there are several monkeys partying and listening to music in Rassvet and there's an ape enjoying a nice cocktail on the roof.

The Pain's camouflage (Chyornaya Peschera Cave)

If you defeat The Pain using non-lethal weapons, you will be rewarded with the 'Hornet Stripe' camouflage after the battle. Jump onto The Pain's island from above to collect the camo. This is a special camouflage which enables the wearer to be protected against attacks from spiders, leeches or hornets, and the latter will even turn on enemies who get too close to Snake. Make sure you wear this camo next time you play the game and fight The Pain!

The questionable effects of the Russian Glowcap (Chyornaya Peschera Cave Br.)

There are some glowing mushrooms in this cave. Collect one and then call Para-medic. After the conversation, eat the Glowcap and then call her again. She will be a bit sceptical of the effects Snake claims it has.

The Snake camouflage (Rokovoj Bereg)

Defeat The Boss by draining her of stamina. After the battle she'll drop the Snake camouflage but you must be quick in retrieving it. This camo will allow you to have a high level of camouflage against most backgrounds in future play throughs of MGS3.

The Snake sheds his tears (After Rokovoj Bereg)

Just before Snake looks at the grave of The Boss, press R1 to see things through Snake's veil of tears.

The Snake who ate everything

To get the 'Markhor' ranking at the end of the game, you will need to acquire at least one of every single specimen of plant and animal in the game. You don't need to eat everything you catch, but it's a good idea seeing as it will then be stored in your Food History list which you can use as a sort of checklist for what you have yet to catch. To access this list, go into the Cure option in the Surival Viewer and open the viewer with R1. Now press R2 to open the Clinical Records and then press left or right to access the Food History list.

The Sorrow('s) remains (Dolinovodno Riverbank)

During the cutscene after Snake has recovered, press R1 and look left. There's a skeleton lying there which is the remains of the Cobra Unit member, The Sorrow.

The Survival Viewer

When you open the Viewer with R1 in the Cure menu, Snake's animation will reflect his current state of health, so if he's in great shape, he will check his body or aim his gun. If he's only got one or two injuries, Snake will sag and feel his abused body. If he has three or more injuries, Snake will slump to his knees. If Snake has a cold, he will sneeze and if he has a stomach ache, he will feel his abdomen. If Snake isn't injuried, depending on the time, Snake could be doing different things including bodybuilding, attempting to cover his groin and just posing. You can move Snake in the viewer with the left stick and turn him around with the right stick. Zoom in and out with Triangle and Square and press L1 and L2 to do the same with the X-Ray. If you rotate Snake approximately ten times in the Survival Viewer and then return to the game, Snake will be sick.

The three snakes (Rokovoj Bereg)

The snakes here are rare and can be found in no other place in the game. They are named Solid, Liquid and Solidus which were the codenames of Big Boss' children.

The transmitter cutscene (Tikhogornyj)

If you still have the transmitter in your back, this area will be guarded by the Ocelot unit who are aware of your presence. Carefully avoid or sort them out and make your way behind the waterfall. During the cutscene with Eva, she will remove the transmitter for you in a very vivid and memorable way.

The ubiquitous Ocelot (After Rokovoj Bereg)

There is a hidden first person cutscene for you to view while Snake is shaking hands with the President. Outside the window, Ocelot is standing there making that familiar gesture. The reason is that Ocelot is the son The Boss talked about during her last fight.

The wonders of the Croc Cap (Chyornyj Prud)

Many people respond to the Crocodile Cap, but why not start by calling Major Zero whilst wearing it.

The wonders of the Tsuchinoko

This is a mystical Japanese creature which is related to the snake. It's short and plump but has a head a bit like a snake's. Your Codec contacts would be very happy to discover you've captured on alive. There is only on tsuchinoko in MGS3, but to find it you must look in one of the following areas: Dremuchij South, Dremuchij Swampland, Dremuchij North, Chyornyj Prud, Bolshaya Past South, Svyatogornyj South, Graniny Gorki South, Svyatogornyj West and Sokrovenno. Put down a mouse trap in one of these areas then leave the area and return to it. There's a 10% chance you'll have caught a tsuchinoko. When you get captured in Groznyj Grad and taken to the Torture Room, your possessions are all taken away from you and all of your food is lost, but if you had a tsuchinoko previously, you can find it flopping around in Tikhogornyj after your encounter with The Sorrow. Capture it again and once you complete the game, you qualify for the Tsuchinoko codename and will receive the Infinity Face Paint (which gives you infinite ammo whilst being worn).

Thermal Goggles advice (Groznyj Grad Underground Tunnel)

Do not look directly at the flames with your Thermal Goggles, OK... Aren't they bright enough anyway?

Treat Eva the same way you would anyone else (Zaozyorje West)

You can easily threaten Eva with one of your weapons, or you could interrogate her with CQC.

Trick The End (Sokrovenno)

Wear the Croc Cap in the river to fool The End, but be warned - this trick only works once. You can also try taking a Fake Death Pill when you're near him. Once he believes you to be dead, take the Revival Pill and fire at him before he realises his mistake and lobs a stun grenade!

Trick Volgin (Weapons Lab: Main Wing B1)

You can trick Volgin into believing you are dead by taking the Fake Death Pill. Take the revival pill when he comes to inspect you and deliver an attack. You can also trick Volgin if you put on the Raikov mask. For a while he will be confused and stunned and won't attack so then's a good time to attack him as well.

Two facepaints to acquire (Ponizovje Warehouse)

The desert face paint which will be very useful on the mountainside later is on the ground floor to the south of the warehouse. The water face paint can be found to the south just before the entrance to the caves - there will be a package in the water.

Unnoticed in Groznyj Grad Southwest

To get through this level without being spotted, from the start run to the left between the first and second bunker, go further to the west and then head north. You can get to the Northeast door this way without stopping once.

Upset the bats (Chyornaya Pechera Cave Branch)

Bats are sensitive to Chaff Grenades and sound waves emitted by the Active Sonar.

Volgin's inspection (Torture Room)

Volgin starts his torture with the words "Let's have a look at your body". After a moment's pause, he will give a response which relates to how many serious injuries Snake had at his time of capture. If Snake had no injuries or one or two, Volgin will respond "What a beautiful body you have. Like a newborn baby..."; if Snake has a few injuries Volgin will say "You've certainly seen your share of battles".; and if Snake has fifteen injuries or more Volgin will comment "You're a tough one, my friend. A lesser man would be dead by now".

Volgin's precautions are not necessarily anti-Snake (Graniny Gorki South)

There is a dead scientist hanging from a tree in the northwest. The traps seem to have been set for the dual-purpose of preventing intruders entering the building and preventing Volgin's scientists escaping if they feel reluctant to continue for working.

Want a taste of Japan? (Dremuchij East)

Here you will find one of the game's rarest creatures, the Japanese Flying Squirrel. It only comes out at night and glides from tree to tree in a fixed pattern. If you want to catch one, get it while it's taking a breather on a tree as opposed to when it's flitting between trees.

Want a tranquilising sniper rifle? (Sokrovenno)

To get The End's sniper rifle which fires only tranquilisers, you must reduce The End's stamina down to zero. After the cutscene of The End's death, his Mosin Nagant will lie a few feet northwest of where Snake is standing.

Watch out for your prey

If you're looking for food in tall grass, stay still and watch the grass until you see blades move. Where blades are moving, a creature is undoubtedly moving - normally something like a frog or a bird. Naturally the Motion Detector and Active Sonar are better for locating animals, but if you're a hunting purist or low on batteries (or have other items equiped), watching the grass can be very useful!

When to call Sigint

Sigint is similar to MGS1's Nastasha Romanenko in that he knows his stuff about weapons but isn't a necessary character. However, he certainly adds flavour to the game and can produce some rather amusing responses when you call him in specific circumstances. Why not try calling him after you have picked up the GA-KO uniform from the swamp, or whilst hiding in the cardboard box you found in Rassvet, or after selecting the Naked uniform...

When to meet Eva (Krasnogorje Mountaintop)

Eva's in the far north-east corner of this area in the ruins, but you cannot get into the building she is in if you are in an Alert or Evasion phase.

While Ocelot's unconscious (Rassvet)

You can shake a mousetrap from Ocelot while he's unconscious. This is useful for catching small animals alive. You must not kill Ocelot after the cutscene because you will cause a Time Paradox if you do (Ocelot has always been a very important character in the world of Metal Gear Solid). If you do kill Ocelot, the voice you hear will be Roy Campbell's of MGS1 and MGS2.

Why flying plaforms? (Ponizovje South)

Call Sigint if you're curious as to why there are Flying Platforms drifting around in 1964.

Yet another end to The End (Sokrovenno)

If you save the game during this fight and somewhere between three to seven days pass without you successfully finishing off The End, the old sniper will beat Snake and a different cutscene will be shown (which will be added to your collection in the Demo Theatre).
